Abstract

The effect of plant extracts of C. rotundus was tested on the spore germination of F. udum. An increase in percent germination, germ tube length and lateral germination was observed at increasing dilution of extracts (between 1:1 to 1:10). A characteristic bulging of spores was observed at higher concentrations. The ethyl acetate extract exhibited an inhibitory effect on spore germination at 1000μg/ml. Fractionation of this extract on silica gel column resulted in eluents rich in flavones and terpenes. Rhizome-meal-amended potato dextrose agar medium induced sector formation and profuse sporulation as compared to the potato dextrose agar medium where sectors were not formed. It is suggested that the chemical(s) responsible for the morphogenetic changes in this fungus may be present in petroleum ether/chloroform fraction(s) of C. rotundus rhizomes.
