Abstract

A new technique is employed to estimate the surface drainage requirement of Kharif rice and corresponding benefit in an area of 270 m x 150 m representing the low-lying lands of Dankuni basin. The results revealed that drainage requirement and economic benefit of the crop varied depending upon the elevations of the lands and levels of water stagnation eliminated by pumping. However, surface drainage of varying operational schedule of pumping with different drainage coefficients in different growth periods of the crop makes it possible to cultivate the hitherto uncultivated waterlogged land with varying economic yields, net returns and benefit-cost ratio.
