Abstract

The developments in space borne remote sensing technology and its application during the last three decades have established its potential for mapping, monitoring and quantifying various natural resources with nearly 90 per cent accuracy. In contrast, the conventional surveys give point estimates, are cumbersome, time consuming, inadequate and hence, may lead to ineffective management of land and water resources. Efficient resource management particularly in the irrigation command areas requires vast and varied spatial and temporal database. Remote sensing is capable to provide them. With the help of limited ground validation, it provides better spatial and more frequent coverage of an area thereby giving information on change in cropping pattern, crop area coverage and crop status over a season on near real time basis.
