Abstract

The homestead fish production is common in Tripura because it is highly preferred and common food item in the diet of about 95% people of the state. But due to the subsistence level of aquaculture practices in the state, productivity and local production of fish is quite insufficient to meet out market demand for fish. Further, due to consumers’ preference, high market value and conservation revitalization of various cultivable species, the importance of diversification of culture of species has been considered to have immense importance in present scenario of aquaculture in the country. This paper highlights characteristics of small-scale fish production system of Tripura, culture practices, species diversification and their economic significance as well as the socioeconomic issues in species diversification.
