Abstract

This study analysed the catch composition of fishes at Teliarganj fish market located at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh in the middle stretch of River Ganga . A total of 26 fish species, belonging to five orders, eight families, and 19 genera, were identified at the market, indicating lower diversity compared to previous studies in the Ganga River. During our survey, fishing activities were primarily conducted by 15 individuals using 16.5-meter-long boats, operating for 12-14 hours. The catch varied between fishing times and
averaged around 100-250 kilograms per day during the primary fishing hours, with lower yields of 50-70 kilograms during the secondary fishing time. Indian major carp constituted a significant portion of the catch and miscellaneous species, particularly Clupisoma garua and Salmostoma bacaila, were also prominent in the catch. Seasonal variations in fish abundance and composition were observed, with monsoon periods exhibiting higher catches of miscellaneous species. The findings emphasize the need to consider seasonal variations and the prevalence of alien fish and catfish in the fisheries of the Ganga River.
