CULTURE OF AMBLYPHARYNGODON MOLA (HAMILTON) IN POLYCULTURE WITH CARPS – A FIELD TRIAL IN TRIPURA
46
Abstract
An experiment was conducted on polyculture of mola with carps in Dhalai, Tripura to evaluate the production performance and feasibility of carp-mola polyculture in the farmers’ ponds. Two treatments with three replicates for each kind were tried. Three species of Indian major carps were stocked in treatment-1 ponds and served as control and in treatment-2 ponds, mola was incorporated along with carps. The carps and mola fish were stocked at the rate of 9500 and 25000 number/ha respectively. The average fish production was recorded to 2132 and 2034 kg/ ha in treatment-1 and treatment-2 ponds, respectively over a period of 210 days. No significant difference was recorded in fish production in between the treatments in farmers’ ponds. Apparently the growth of carps was lower in the presence of mola, but the overall fish production was compensated by mola. Partial harvest of mola is a pre-requisite to maintain compatibility among large carps and small fish.
