Abstract
Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote sensing (RS) technology is being used rapidly in many fields of resource management for decision-making and policy development by preparing thematic maps, inventories and specific GIS applications. Indian fisheries sector has not yet started utilizing the technology of GIS in a rightful approach. In the present study, an endeavor was made to utilize the basic applications of GIS, RS and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies for fisheries sector, by preparing thematic maps of the fisheries infrastructural facilities in the Greater Mumbai region of Maharashtra state. The spatial dataset of the study comprised of Landsat satellite imagery and Survey of Indian (SOI) topographical maps. The Geographical coordinates viz. latitude and longitude of nineteen fish landing centers, twenty three fisherman villages, thirty fisheries cooperative societies, eleven important fish markets and nine fisheries related organizations in the study area, were collected with the help of handheld GPS unit and integrated to prepare thematic maps using  ArcGIS 9.2 platform.
