Abstract

The optimization of mycelial growth of two edible mushroom using different carbon and nitrogen source under submerged culture condition was tested using basal synthetic media replacing the various carbon and nitrogen source. In addition, antioxidant potential was determined using peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and  catalase activity. The highest dry weight was noted in Lentinus tuber-regium and Macrocybe gigantea using dextrose as a carbon source. The best nitrogen source found in L. tuber-regium and M. gigantea was peptone and yeast extract, respectively. The growth of mycelial biomass is slow and less in M. gigantea  using carbon source; however, addition of nitrogen source increases the biomass yield. M. gigantea exhibited the highest peroxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity and catalase activity. The best source of carbon and nitrogen can be used for maximum biomass yield of two studied mushroom. Moreover, the study reveals both the species of mushroom have a rich source of antioxidant property.
