Abstract
Abstract       Â
During cultivation of various varieties of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) in an outdoor mushroom hut in the year 2010 and 2012 for doctoral research at Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, India, a Coleopteran beetle later on identified as Tritoma pallidipes (Arrow) of the family Erotylidae was seen feeding exclusively on the fruit bodies of P. citrinopileatus. This beetle was found to be a new pest of Pleurotus and being reported for the first time in this paper. Adult beetles were found to feed on gills and pileus and occasionally causing perforations in the mature fruit bodies resulting in to poor quality of the fruit bodies with a consequent decrease in mushroom yield. Infestation of fruit bodies by the insect during first flush of cropping often resulted into either a complete loss of fruiting in second flush or a drastic reduction of yield both in quantity and quality. Exclusive feeding on fruit bodies of P. citrinopileatus indicates towards its fungal host preference.
