Comparative Study of Three Pleurotus Spp. Cultivated on Two Different Substrates with Special Reference to Their Biochemical and Antibacterial Activities

Abstract
Cultivation of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp) is a very simple low cost technology. Three Pleurotus spp. (P. ostreatus, P. florida and P. pulmonarius) were successfully cultivated in 30 ± 2â°C on two different substrates viz. rice straw and sugarcane bagasse. The biological efficiency (BE) was better in rice straw  than sugarcane bagasse when used as substrate. The highest BE was found in P. florida followed by P. ostreatus. All the biochemical studies were done using 70% methanolic extract of fresh mushroom fruiting bodies except protein and carbohydrate determination.  When cultivated on sugarcane bagasse,  P. pulmonarius showed the highest carbohydrate content (103.4 μg/mg dry wt.) whereas P. ostreatus showed the highest protein content (12 μg/mg dry wt.). P. ostreatus showed the highest polyphenol content (6.11 μg/mg dry wt.) and  P. pulmonarius (1.66 μg/mg dry wt)  showed the lowest when grown in rice straw. Flavonoid contents were highest in P. florida when grown in sugarcane bagasse. Antioxidant activities of the mushroom extract in terms of DPPH oxidation was estimated in all the species and there was no notable differences on the effect of  substrates. P. ostreatus showed the highest DPPH oxidation whereas P. pulmonarius showed the lowest. Methanolic extract of all the fruiting bodies showed the antibacterial activities. There was no remarkable  differences of antimicrobial activities among the mushrooms derived from two different substrates. Rice straw grown  P. pulmonarius showed the maximum growth inhibition of bacteria.
