Abstract

Effective weed and nutrient management are crucial for enhancing yield in direct seeded rice, as improper weed management and unbalanced nutrient in DSR significantly reduces the productivity. The brown manuring through growing a legume crop in DSR improved the nutrient efficiency while effectively suppress the weeds. Studies have shown that the weed densities and weed biomass under brown manuring treatments were statistically on par to weed free treatments and often next best to weed free treatments. In some cases, it is equivalent to hand weeding twice. Additionally, the decomposition of sesbania in DSR adds organic matter to the soil, and enhancing nutrient uptake efficiency. It also improved the soil physio-chemical properties, and increased the beneficial microorganisms and enzymes in soil. Therefore, practicing the brown manuring not only effectively control weeds in rice, but also improve the nutrient uptake, and overall productivity of DSR.
