Downstream of Hogenakkal Falls in river Cauvery, India is a deep pool attracting large-sized fishes. The deep pool does not support conventional fishery; instead heavily exploited for fishing with hook & line. Based on the food and feeding habits of the targeted species, fishers use as many as eight types of fish attractants as baits to be attached with hooks and lure the fish. For herbivorous and omnivorous fishes, three types of baits, whereas, for carnivorous fishes, five types of baits were used. Method of preparation, mode of use, size of hooks, targeted species, conservation issues, etc have been discussed.Downloads
