Abstract

Natural resources can be managed under alternative resource governance structures. Dissatisfaction with pure government, community and private governance has led to great interest in shared governance of renewable natural resources in general and non-timber forest products in particular. Some competing models of how to accomplish greater involvement of forest communities, state forest department and forest product based industries in decision making and administration include cooperative management, co-management and rights-based management. This paper presents an analysis of shared management in nontimber forest resources using cooperative governance model in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
