Investigation was carried out at Kanpur on light textured and slopy alluvial soils of central Uttar Pradesh for two consecutive kharif seasons of 1995 and 1996 to study the effect of different biological barriers on growth and developmental characters, yield attributes and yield, water use efficiency and heat unit efficiency of three varieties of sorghum. S. sesban excelled all other biological barriers by exhibiting an all round better effect on various growth and developmental parameters like plant height, LAI, CGR, NAR and yield attributes and yield, water use efficiency and heat unit efficiency of sorghum. It is closely followed by L. leucocephala while the poorest performance of crop was observed under unbarriered control plot. The grass barriers, namely, V. zizanoides and C. ciliaris were found better over control but lagged behind legume barriers viz. S. sesban, L. leucocepha and C. cajan. Overall, consideration for growth and developmental parameter, yield attributes and yield, water use and water use efficiency and energy utilization, var. Varsha appeared better than CSV-13 and CSV-15 and also found efficient utilizer of moisture under dryland condition.
