Abstract

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of 26 provenances of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) collected from different parts of central India. The growth trial was planted in July, 1994 and experiment was laid out in a randomised block design in three replications. Provenances were assessed for tree height, collar diameter, diameter at breast height and wood volume 6.5 years after plantation. From the results of growth attributes, it appeared that provenances of Riva, Bhopal, Dabra, Jabalpur, Kota, and Panna were found promising. Provenances belonging to higher rainfall areas had better growth than provenances of low rainfall areas. Maximum growth of neem was observed during April - October and minimum during October - March. Tree growth was affected significantly by temperature while soil moisture had little effect. Temperature more than 30°C favours the growth of neem.
