Abstract

Poplar (Populus deltoides) is one of the fast growing exotic species which has widespread adaptability in the north-western parts of India. To assess the production of poplar at various ages, poplar plantations were selected in central Punjab around Ludhiana. To estimate the timber volume and weight, tree diameter at breast height, total tree height and survival percentage were recorded on the tree plantations in the river-bed and table-land areas. All these growth parameters had shown higher values in river-bed areas which may be due to the reason that river-bed plantations received proper silvicultural treatments and care and had sufficient moisture throughout period for their growth.
