Abstract

This study reports the occurrence of tricotyledonous seedlings in the progeny of single tree of Acacia nilotica, growing in the semi-arid region of central India. Frequency of tricots ranged from 6.67-7.10% in two lots of seed used for germination tests after hot water and sulphuric acid treatments given to break the seed coat imposed dormancy. An average germination of 81.63% was recorded in both the treatments. No difference in morphology of tricotyledon and normal seedlings was observed. This peculiar phenotype could be an interesting subject for basic biological studies and useful as a morphological characteristic to distinguish cultivars.
