Abstract

The drainage basin analysis is important for investigations like surface runoff, sediment yield, and assessment of groundwater potential and development. Landuse and basin characterization can be utilized for better management and conservation of natural resources. Therefore, land use and morphometric analysis was carried out at Parasai-Chhatpur watershed, located in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. The drainage network of watershed was delineated using Survey of India (S.O.I.) toposheets of 1: 50,000 scale using G.I.S software, Arc GIS 10. The study area is spread over 4.78 km2 and its main stream is found to be of 3rd order. Majority of the area was occupied by agriculture (88%) followed by scrubland. The dominant slope category in the micro-watershed was 5-10 per cent (45.28%) followed by 3-5 per cent (23.40%). It was also noticed that slope of major area of agricultural land varied from 3-10 per cent. The bifurcation ratio varied from 2.6 to 5.0 with an average of 3.8, indicating that the watershed chosen for the study was not circular in shape. Length of main channel, basin length and basin perimeter were found as 2.77, 2.92 and 15.91 km, respectively. The fineness ratio was 0.18. The lower drainage density of the watershed (1.92 km/km2) indicates coarse drainage pattern. The relief and relief ratio were found to be 34 m and 0.012, respectively. The circulatory and elongation ratio were found to be 0.24 and 0.85, respectively. Elongation ratio of 0.85 confirmed that the study area was having moderate relief and gentle ground slope. These values indicate that Parasai-Chhatpur watershed would produce delayed peak flow.
