Abstract

Lightning is a powerful natural atmospheric phenomenon that poses severe risks to human life, livestock, crops, and infrastructure, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. In India, where agriculture remains highly dependent on open-field cultivation, lightning incidence has emerged as a major natural hazard causing thousands of deaths annually, along with significant economic and ecological losses. Its impacts extend beyond human casualties to agriculture, forestry, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods. Lightning-induced injuries include burns, neurological damage, and long-term psychological effects, while in plants, it causes tissue combustion, vascular damage, and reduced productivity. Livestock and wild animals also suffer from mass fatalities, whereas avifauna face sudden mortality and habitat destruction. The rising frequency of thunderstorms, attributed to climate change and environmental degradation, further intensifies the risks. Adaptation and mitigation strategies such as lightning protection systems, early warning mechanisms, mobile-based applications, community preparedness, and improved land-use planning are essential to minimize losses. This paper highlights the causes, impacts, and adaptive measures necessary to address lightning hazards with special reference to agroforestry systems.
