Abstract

The freshwater prawns belonging to thegenus Macrobrachium of the crustacean subfamilypalaemoninae, include more than 60%of the prawn species. They are highly esteemedas nutritive proteinaceous food bearinga var)nng market price for larger formsfrom Rs. 60-120 per kg in India. They haveaverage adult weight of 50 g and total length200 mm. They are extensively distributed infreshwater and estuaries of the world mostlyin tropical and sub-tropical belts. In all, about150 species of this genus are known from theworld out of which 37 belong to India.However, only half a dozen species of genusMacrobrachium are of major economic value inIndia viz. M. rosenber<^i, M. malcolmsonii,M. choprai, M. birmanicum, M. rudis andM. villosimanus.
