OXYGEN CONSUMPTION IN THE PENAEID PRAWN, METAPENAEUS MONOCEROS UNDER SALINITY STRESS
87 / 42
Abstract
Salinity stress coupled with metabolicadjustments alters osmotic and ionic balancein animals (Prosser, 1973; Gilles, 1974,1975).The oxygen consumption of crustaceans varieswith salinity fluctuations (Mantel and Farmer,1983; Gilles and Pequex, 1983; Janakiram,1987). Since the available data on the salinityeffects in the penaeid prawns deals mostlywith the changes in ionic regulation, thepresent study was made to describe thechanges in total and tissue oxygen consumptionin the penaeid prawn, Metapenaeus monocerosexposed to different salinity media.Downloads
