Abstract
Macrobrachium choprai, a northern Indian freshwater prawn, inhabiting the middle stretch of Ganga riversystem is one of the most important fishery products. Its declining fishery necessitates its pond cultureand as such an understanding about its food and feeding habits is a prerequisite. All size group sampleshave been collected from landing centres of its habitat during different seasons. For evaluating the importanceof all food items of the gut "Index of preponderance' method was followed. The feedingintensity was measured by calculating "Gastrosomatic index' and "Condition of feed'. It is omnivorous, voracious micro/macrophagous in feeding habit. The gut contents comprised diatoms, green algae, bluegreen algae, crustaceans, fish flesh, grains, nuts, fruits, macrovegetation, dead and decayed organic matterand sand mixed mud. This species has been found feeding at bottom during day and in column duringnights.Downloads
