Abstract

Stock assessment is defined as "anyscientific study to determine the productivityof a fishery resource and the impact (on theresource and the fishery) of changing patternsof fishing" (Gulland, 1983). The primaryobjective of fisheries management is tomainfian a balance between under utilizationand overexploitation of the resource leadingto sustained yields and economic catch rates.Stock assessment is basic to all programmesenvisaged for attainment of such a balance
