THE REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY OF GOBIOIDES RUBICUNDUS (HAM. BUCH.) IN THE KARNAPHULI RIVER ESTUARY CHITTAGONG
389 / 260
Abstract
The male female ratio of Gobioides rubicundus was found to be 1:1.9. Male G. mbicundus was foundto attain sexual maturity at 54 mm total length and the female at a total length of 58 mm. Five stages
of maturity viz. immature (stage 1), maturing or rebuilding (stage II), mature (stage III), fully mature or
ripe (stage IV) and spent (stage V) were identified on the basis of the morphological characteristics of the
gonads, gonadosomatic indices (GSI) and ratios between the total lengths ± 2 X S.E. and gonad lengths.
Spawning periods of the male was found to extend from late January to early February and from late June
to early October while those of the female extended from late January to early February and from late
August to early September. Annual cyclical changes were observed in the hcpatosomatic index (HSI)
and condition factor (K). Both of these parameters reached their peaks in the prespawning and early
spawning periods
