162 / 202
Abstract
Analysis of the gut contents of Daysciaena alblda collected from the Vembanad lake showed thatprawns, teleosts, juvenile crabs, amphipods and isopods formed the m^or part of the diet. The juveniles
seem to have a preference for planktonic forms like post larvae of prawns, crab larvae, amphipods, isopods
and nereid polychaetes. Seasonal variation in the food of juveniles and adults observed are given.
The feeding intensity calculated for the year 1980 showed that the percentage of gorged, full and 3/4 full
stomachs was less in most of the months when compared to 1/2 full, 1/4 full, trace and empty. The
occurrence of empty stomachs was encountered in most of the months except in March and the percentage
of empty stomachs was high from July to November which is the peak spawning period of this
species. The stomach contents in general revealed that the fish is a macrophagous carnivore, feeding
on both subsurface and bottom dwelling organisms.
