STUDIES ON NEUROSECRETORY CELLS IN THE ABDOMINAL GANGLIA OF TIGER PRAWN, PENAEUS MONO DON (FABRICIUS)
108 / 97
Abstract
Histomorphology of the abdominal ganglion of a penaeid prawn, P. Monodon has been studied bymeans of classic neurosecretory staining techniques, i. e., CHP-, AF-, RF-and Azan. Two neurosecretory
cell (NSC) groups namely antero-median (Aam) and postero-median (Apm) are identified mostly at the
ventral profile of the ganglion in question. Three (A-, B-, and C-) NSC types, based on their morphological
characteristics and tinctorial affinity, have been recognised. All these cell types are ubiquitous in
both the groups despite fluctuation in the number of a particular cell type. Evidence for axonal transport
as well as peripheral discharge of neurosecretory material (NSM) are also noticed.
