ON THE SEASONAL CHANGES IN FOOD HABIT OF MUGIL CEPHALUS OF THE THANA CREEK
253 / 237
Abstract
The food habit of Mugil cephalus in Thana creek near Thane city shows aseasonal change. The fish feed on Syllis sp. from August to December, with
an average feeding intensity of 14.38%. In the remaining months, the main food
constituent is made up of diatoms, when the feeding intensity is on an
average 62.55%. The condition factors 'K' and 'Kn' show two minima, one in
the low feeding period and the other in the high feeding period. The maxima of
'K' and 'Kn' also follow the same pattern. Average 'K' and 'Kn' are lower during
high feeding period compared to those in low feeding period. Hence the type of
food is the major factor in determining the robustness of M. cephalus.
The muscle fats do not vary in proportion to the feeding intensity. Dissolved
oxygen in ambient water, which is depleted in summer, shows a significant
relationship with fat content.
