Abstract

Major carps like Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Labeo caJbasu, Labeo fimbriatus,
Labeo kontius, Cirrhina mrigala, Cirrhina cirrhosa etc., forin the bulk of
the food fishes cultured in the ponds and tanks in India. They have
not been hitherto observed to spawn in confined waters. So, every
year millions of fry and fingerlings of the major carps are collected from their
riverine habitats and transplanted into the various ponds and tanks scattered
all over the country.
