CATCH CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BONNY COASTAL ARTISANAL CANOE FISHERY FROM 1976 TO 1981

Abstract
Annual average total landings (kg) of some major fish species, barracudaiSphyraena piscatonim), bonga (Ethmalosa fimbricata), sea catfish (Arius heudeloti),
croaker (Pseudotolithus spp.), sardine (Sardinella eba), Shinynose (Polydactylus
spp.), sting ray (Dasyatis margarita) and Tilapia, per fisherman for the
Bonyy coastal artisanal canoe fishery from 1976 to 1981 show little variations
in the catch figures. The lack of accurate catch per unit of effort and biological
information about the species prevent estimation of stocks. Species by species variations
in the exvessel prices of fish from year to year, and the importance of
Nigeria's coastal artisanal canoe fishery are discussed. The 1981 average price of
Naira 2.08 per kilogram of fish is reasonably low, compared to the higher prices of
other animal proteins such as beef, pork and poultry. The Nigerian coastal fishery
holds promise as an inexpensive human dietary protein source.
