Abstract
A comparative haematological study on seven freshwater fishes, Mystustengara, Heteropneustes fossilis, Labeo bata, Labeo ciirsa, Notopterus notopterus,
Mastacemblus pancalus and Channa punctatus, revealed that the RBC count, Hb
content and haematocrit are highest in M. tengara and H. fossilis. two very active,
predacious species. The ranges of different haematological parameters of the
seven species are: RBC 2.74 x 10* to 4.03 x lOVmm' WBC 12.40 x 10^ to
31.40 X 10'/mm^ Hb% 8.00 to 15.4 g|dl, PCV 27.27 to 48.33ldl, MCV 84.68 to
168.83 /*m^ MCHC 22.97 to 33.97 g|dl and MCH 20.73 to 46.43 pg. An inverse
relationship was found to exist between the number and the size of red blood cells.
Levels of urea, bilirubin, cholesterol and inorganic phosphorus and thymol turbidity
vary in different species according to their habits
