Abstract
Samples of the ·pearl oyster, Pinetada fucata, collected from Tholayiram,ipul:ipundu a,nd K1.ldamuthu pa,ars in the Gulf of Mannar wereanaJysed to study
the relationsh'p among th.~ Hne·ar dimensions, namely dorsoventral measurement,
hinge I<ength, :wtemposte·rior measurement and thickness. A cha·nge of form occurs
from subquadtate in the youn,g to oblong in the aduJ,t oyste.rs. The hinge length is
-about 1.22-1.26 tim:s the dorsoventral dimension in the youngest size group, but
both become equall at a size of about 35 mm. The.re.after, the dorsovent.ral dimension
is ,aJways grea1ter than the hinge J:ne.
