Abstract

There ha,s been a dedirne in the mackerel catches in the Mangalore area
in recent years. This aispect was spedaUy kept in mind in ,the oourse of investigations
on -the fishery and biology of mackelrel c'lln-ied out from July 1969 to
June 1973 alt two centre,s viz., UUaland Baikampady lmow:n for gill-net (pattabala)
and shOl1e-'s,eine (rampani) catches ,re1speotively, ,the 'results of which have
been pI'esented he1"e. &l,rHer 's,tudi'es OIn the fishery and biology of. mackerel in
this area by Sekharan (1958) Georg'eetal. (1959) .Rao et aI. (1962) and
!talO (1962 and 1967) have oOIIl'tribut,ed consideiI'ably to lOur knowl'edge of the
