TOXICITY OF NICOTINE TO AQUATIC LIFE

Abstract
Nicntine, a plant alkaloid, has pot'errtiaJity of a fish poison (Konar 1969a,1970). Nicotine is more toxic to' fish than to' aquatic insects (Phillips and Swingle
1940, Brown 1951). This paper describels the toxicity of nicotine to freshwater
fimes, insects and plankters; ,the influence .of turbidity, sodium oarbonate and
lim:'l on the toxicity of nicotine; the residual toxicity of nicotine in water; and
the histopathological effects IOf nicotine on fish.
