Abstract

Studies on the fecundity and spawning' behaviour of commercially important
species of fish are of great va,lue in understanding the reproductive potential
of the fish. Schil.othorax esocinus, indigenous to Kashmir waters, forms
an important fishery in i Dal Lake. No information is available on :the fecundity
and breeding bebaviour :ot-.thi,s ,comtn'erciany~mportall't species. The previous
investigations madea're by M'8tbotra (1962) on comparative anatomy of ovaries
and fecundity of some Kashmir fishes; Singh and Das (1969) on the fecundity
of five fishes 'of Kashmir and Jyoti and Malhotra (1972) on the fecundity ,of
S. niger.
