Abstract

While studying the taxonomy of the group Sardinella, t!he auth'Or came
across Ispecimens of Sardinella melanura having 26-31 giiIrakers on the' upper
and 49-56 On the lower limb. Since ,this obse:rvat~on provides a supporting evidence
t'O Whitehead's (1967) question 'On Chan's (1965) S. nigricaudata and
the descripttons Iseen in many of the Indian works d'O not appear t'O have been
based onex~mination of correctly identified mat,erial, a brief redescripti'On of the
species is feH neoessary.
