Abstract

Mussel cuttnre 1'8 the most import.ant form of saltwater aquacW.tu.re and
is unique among aquacu1itural practices as tt prodluces a staple food rather than
a lUXury ttem{B'wach et. aI., 1972). Spain is the leading nation in mussel
culture producing about 300,000 kglha of dramoo meat .in a·~. In, India,
Qasim and Achari (1972) have caaied out preIiminary expe.rimenltson mussel
culture Il't Vizlhinjam and obtained a: yield of ahout 200 tons per hectare pee
year. JOOO8 and Alwgarswam,iJ (1973) have given a gener.ail.'picture of the mussel
fishery resources of Indla. The potential resources for mussels are very high
and w~tJh suiItable methods of cuiture the produCition could be increased 0011-
sidembly (Qa's:im 1975)
