FOULING AND BORING ORGANISMS AND MORTALITY OF PEARL OYSTERS IN THE FARM AT VEPPALODAI, GULF OF MANNAR
138 / 359
Abstract
Experiments on pearl culture were taken up at Veppalodai, near Tuticorin,in 1972, which resulted in the successful development of spherical cultured
pearls for the first time in India (Alagarswami 1974fl). In the course of the
experunents, it was noticed that fouling was a serious-problem in the farm
(Alagarswami and Qasim 1973). Similarly, Kuriyan (1950) had observed a
dense settlement of organisms on the pearl-oyster cages at Krusadai island, in
the Gulf of Mannar.
