PENAEID PRAWN CATCHES FROM PULICAT LAKE IN RELATION TO INGRESS OF POST-LARVAE AND LAKE HYDROGRAPHY
110 / 192
Abstract
The relationship between recruitment of the post-larvae of Penaeus indicus,P. monodon and P. semisulcatus into Pulicat Lake and the commercial catch is
discussed taking into consideration the rainfall and the prevailing hydrographic
features like water temperature and salinity, on the basis of observations made
daring the period July 1968 to December 1970. The post-larvae of these species
are available round the year. The post-larvae of P. indicus immigrate into the lake
mostly during August to October and March to April and those of P. monodon
duiing July to November and March to April. The post-larvae of P. semisulcatus
immigrate during August to October and March to May [June. These larval peaks
determine the magnitude of the subsequent prawn production in the lake
