ESTIMATION OF TOTAL MORTALITY RATES OF MUGIL CEPHALUS LINNAEUS IN PULICAT LAKE
120 / 76
Abstract
Total mortality rates i.e., the sum of natural and fishing mortality rates ofMugil cephalus during 1966 and 1967 in the Pulicat Lake are estimated. As per
the age frequencies in the fishery, the following values were obtained for the
annual mortality rate (r), survival rate (s) and the instantaneous mortality rate
(i): 0.3606, 0.6394 and 0.4917, respectively. An instantaneous mortality rate of
0.5187 was derived using asymptotic length (Lcri), length at recruitment (Lr)
and average length (L).
