VARIATIONS IN THE LIVER CHOLESTEROL OF THE CARP, CIRRHJNA MRIGALA DURING MATURATION
112 / 80
Abstract
Liver cholesterol level of CirrlUna mrigala (Ham.), an important majorcarp, has been foi^nd to be markedly influenced by the cycle of maturation and
delation of gonad^. In both sexes, the highest amount of cholesterol was noted in
the liver during tl]|e recovering phase. Advancement in maturation was accompanied
by depletion in the liver cholesterol reserves and the minimal value was
obtained at the tinje of peak ripeness. These changes in the concentration pattern
of liver cholesterol seem related to variations in the cholesterol metabolism of the
fish, necessiated, besides other factors, by the demand for sex hormones
