127 / 277
Abstract
As a part of the investigations on the suspected depletion of the fisheryresources of river Godavari. between the anicuts at Dowlaiswaram and Dumma-
£udem, assessment c^ the present status of the several fish populations has become
imperative. The major carp, Labeo fimbriatus (Bloch) is one of the
important species of the river, contributing to nearly 9% of the landings. Annual
yields of the species from 1963 to 1969 were 35.02, 26.61, 22.02, 19.83, 24.40,
14,46 and 11.70 tonnes respectively, thus showing a trend of continuous decline
up to 1966, a slight increase in 1967 and again a fall up to 1969. Therefore,
detailed studies on age and growth, length-weight relationship, maturity and
fecundity of this species were conducted and the results are presented here.
