Abstract
Fishes of the genus Ophlcephalus, popularly known as' murrels' constituteabout 5.64 per cent of the inland fisheries of Tamil Nadu ranking next in importance
only to carps and catfishes (Chacko and George, 1958). Bulk of the fishery
in the plains is composed of Ophlcephalus striatui (Bloch) and Ophlcephalus
punctatus (Bloch).
