Abstract

Oxygen consumption of Etroplus suratensis and Mugil macrolepis was
measured in relation to live body weight at 28.0°C ( i 1.0°C). Measurements
of oxygen consumption indicated a relationship between oxygen consumption
(Q -= mg 02/hr) and live body weight (W = g) of, Q = 0.506W ".839 f^j E,^g,
plus suratensis and Q = O.603W ^.723 for Mugil macrolepis. A comparison of
the available data for some other tropical and temperate fishes showed that in
both these fishes the consumption of oxygen is greater. With the increase in
body weight the oxygen consumption decreases
