Abstract
In Heteropneuites fossilis length frequency distribution gave no indication of yearclasses. Only one quarter gave some evidence of 4 modes indicating about four years of
life span of the fish.
Both sexes mature when 12 to 13 cm in length. The females occur two times more
in population than the males and the former grows longer than the latter. The two
sexes can be distinguished externally by the presence of a genital papilla in the males.
The rise and fall in the condition factor 'K' seem more correlated with the feeding
rhythm of the fish than with the seasonal changes in gonad weight.
The flsh mainly Feeds on molluscs, cypris, chironomid larvae, small fishes, copepods,
weeds, sand and mud, debris, algae etc. The feeding intensity is maximum during
monsoon and wintijr months and minimum in summer. Younger fishes are mainly
plankton feeders
