Abstract

The paper reports for the first time the occurrence of Ulua mandibularis in the Indian
seas. A detailed description of the species is given including several important and
additional characters. The changes in body form, in the soft dorsal fin length and in
the dentition with growth of fish are described and illustrated.
A study of the descriptions of U. mandibularis (Macleay) and U. richardsoni Jordan
and Snyder in the light of the present observations reveals them to be synonymous, the
latter being the junior synonym
