STUDIES ON ERADICATION OF PREDATORY AQUATIC INSECTS FROM FISH NURSERIES
117 / 228
Abstract
Asphyxiation studies with a view to eradicating mosquito-larvae by applicationof petroleum oils and toxic larvicides have been fairly common. Comparatively,
work on eradication of predatory air-breathing aquatic insects, particularly
from fish-nurseries, has been lacking. Hoffman et al. (1946), Tarzwell (1947, 1950),
Dondoroff e/ al. (1953), Rudd and Greenly (1956) and Harrington and Bidlingmayer
(1958) have pointed out that toxic larvicides and insecticides are hazardous to fish
and other pond life. As regards the application of oils or their emulsions for eradication
of aquatic insects in fish-nurseries, Meehean (1937) recommended the use of
1 part of cod liver oil to 3 parts of kerosene. Pakrasi (1953) tried the emulsions of
soap and vegetable oils in the proportion of 1 to 3 parts by weight, which has also
been recommended by AUkunhi (1956).
