Abstract

Benthic primary production in the mangrove and non mangrove areas were studied for one year from Feb 1998 to Jan 1999. Mangrove area recorded higher benthic primary productivity, chlorophyll – a, phaeopigments, phytoplankton biomass, sediment nutrients and organic carbon than non mangrove area.
Benthic primary productivity has got significant correlation coefficient with temperature of water and sediment, salinity, phytoplankton and chlorophyll – a of the sediment. Seasonally, premonsoon period recorded higher phytobenthic production followed by postmonsoon and monsoon season
