Abstract
Present investigation on the distribution of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Hg) in water was carried out in the Ariyankuppam estuary (station 1) and the Verampattinam coast (station 2) of Pondicherry. Metal concentration in watershowed pronounced seasonal variation and it was high during the monsoon season. The following order of abundance of metals -Zn>Cu>Cd>Pb>Hg was observed during the present investigation at both the stations. Station 2 recorded more concentration of the metals than station 1 and their concentrations remained well within the ranges reported for these metals from other nearshore and estuarine waters of the southeast coast of India
