Seasonal variations in the occurrence of marine ornamental fishes in the by-catch of Ponnani Fishing Harbour, Kerala

Abstract
A survey was made to identify the potential marine ornamental fishes in the trawl by-catch of the Ponnani Fishing Harbour, southwest coast of India in order to assess its temporal and spatial availability. A total of 40 species of ornamental fishes belonging to 22 families were collected during the presentstudy. These fishes were discarded due to low consumer acceptance and small size. With simple infrastructure, these fishes could be kept alive onboard and brought to the harbour. The target is to detail how most of the fishes landed in
live condition without fin or body damages, can be used for aquarium purposes by careful conditioning.
