Effect of substratum on the community structure of macrobenthic fauna from southern sector of Chilika Lake
118 / 139
Abstract
Seasonal fluctuations of macrobenthic fauna in the southern sector of Chilika Lake were analysed quantitatively in relation to physico-chemicalcharacteristics of bottom water and texture of substratum. The fauna comprised 35 taxa of 14 major orders with the dominance of polychaete and crustacean comprising of 79 species. Stationwise faunal similarity was noticed but relative abundance of species differed. Physico-chemical characteristics like temperature (r = - 0.7901, p< 0.01) and salinity (r = 0.9875, p> 0.01) were presumed to be the major factors influencing the population density of benthic fauna. Poor population density and decrease in number of species were found during monsoon. Fauna with higher densities was found at the lagoon in contrast to the Station-I (Palur canal) indicating biological advantages of lagoon.
